Proper Aftercare is crucial.

Product

In your take-home kit, you will receive some full size products that you absolutely need to care for your investment, as well as some samples that we highly recommend for your specific hair type. Your routine should consist of at a minimum: Sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner, leave in conditioner, heat protectant, and hair oil. Please note, there are more products that provide more benefit than just the minimum and may extend the longevity of your investment. We will go over these with you in detail during your installation.

Hair Wash Day

On hair wash day, you'll wash your extensions exactly the way you would your natural hair, but making sure to get between the wefts while using gentle scalp massage techniques. We will teach you how to do this during your installation and make sure you feel comfortable doing so at home! You will condition the same as well, making sure to avoid getting the conditioner too close to the wefts. It is recommended that you use a clarifying shampoo once per week or every-other wash, as well as a hair masque. On days that you are not washing your hair, a claw clip and shower cap are recommended.

Detangling

We will provide you with a detangling brush and a leave-in conditioner that functions as a detangler. It is vital that you go section-by-section when detangling, and start from the ends while making your way up. We will review this with you during your appointment. Wet detangling brushes are available for purchase at Storybook Salon if you prefer having one for post-shower.

Sleeping

You will find a silk sleeping cap in your extension take-home kit. Wearing this at night helps preserve your style the next day (less heat), and also helps your extensions last longer by reducing friction when you toss and turn at night. This helps to reduce unnecessary breakage and frizz. You can also wear your hair in a loose braid or heatless curl rods under the silk sleep cap.

Heat Styling

Extensions receive no natural oils produced by the scalp. Because of this, it is extra important that we do not strip all moisture out of the hair. It is crucial that you:

  • keep all hot tools to a maximum of 350° Fahrenheit

  • always use a wet heat protectant before blowdrying

  • always use a dry heat protectant before heat styling

  • don't repeatedly go over the same section

  • fully dry before curling or smoothing

  • do not use your hair oil immediately before heat styling

Regular Maintenance

Your natural hair grows approximately 1/2 inch per month. As it grows, your wefts move further away from the scalp and the foundation becomes less secure. To maintain comfort, concealment, and the integrity of your natural hair, maintenance is required every 6-8 weeks. Waiting longer than the recommended time frame can cause excess tension on your natural hair, increased tangling at the root, visible grow out, and compromised bead security. Your stylist will schedule your next appointment before you leave.
