If you live in Central Virginia with us, you already know spring humidity hits differently around here.
One minute your hair looks smooth and the next you step outside and suddenly everything is frizzy, sticky, or melting off your face.
Humidity can be incredibly frustrating for both hair and skin, but with the right prep, you can keep everything looking healthier, smoother, and more manageable all season long.
Why Humidity affects hair so much
Hair naturally absorbs moisture from the air. In humid climates such as Central Virginia, there is excess moisture in the air, which causes the hair cuticle (outermost layer of the hair) to swell. Think of the hair cuticle like shingles on a roof... you want them to lay flat. When they swell, they are open, allowing moisture in, color out, etc.
This can lead to frizz, puffiness, loss of style definition, limp strands, and extensions that become more difficult to manage.
Blondes or those with naturally porous hair are especially susceptible to humidity induced issues because porous hair absorbs moisture quickly and unevenly.
How to Humidity-Proof Your Hair
One of he biggest mistakes people make is focusing only on styling instead of hair health.
Healthy, hydrated hair tends to handle humidity much better, because those shingle-like cuticles are closed more tightly/ lying more flat and uneasy to penetrate.
Here are some things that make a huge difference:
using professional moisturizing products
heat protectant every single time
lightweight hair oils on mids and ends
sleeping with hair protected at night
regular trims
consistent seasonal in-salon treatments
For styling, anit-humidity products and smoothing creams can help create a barrier against moisture in the air. This barrier will not allow anything to penetrate so easily, reducing overall frizz and further problems.
Another tip: honestly, in the summer in this area, embracing a more natural curly or wavy look is easier than fighting for a rigidly smooth style.
The best thing you can do if you are fighting frizz day-in and day-out is invest in a once or twice annual smoothing system. At Storybook Salon, we use the Amika Pro Smooth Over Frizz Fighting treatment which uses glyocylic acid, aloe vera extract, sea buckthorn, and other plant-based elements to allow an easier-to-style, easier-to-manage, looks-like-I-straightened-it-but-all-I-did-was-blow-it-out look for up to 8+ weeks. This is a game changer in the Central Virginia humidity, and we love this product because unlike other smoothing systems, it does not rely on protein, keratin, or formaldehyde releasers to smooth your hair.
Dont forget your skin
Humidity can also leave skin feeling congested, oily, irritated, or dehydrated all at once.
During warmer months, skin often benefits fromL
lighter moisture (but never NO moisture)
gentle exfoliation
SPF every day (maybe switch to an oil-free like the Glymed Plus Oil Free Protective Moisturizer SPF 30)
hydrating serums
and professional facials to keep the skin balanced and free of congestion
One of the biggest misconceptions is that oily skin doesn't need hydration. In reality, dehydrated skin can actually produce more oil because it is trying to compensate!
Summer Beauty Starts with Prep
The truth is, humidity is unavoidable here. But with the right products, treatments, healthy maintenance, and realistic expectations, your hair and skin can still thrive through Virginia spring and summers!
A little prep goes a long way, and we're here to help you create that routine!
